About Christina
Harpist Christina Kant is a dedicated performer with a love of sharing music. Her repertoire extends through various genres, both solo and orchestral.
As an orchestral musician, Christina has been commended by conductors for musicality and preparation. She is often a substitute in professional orchestras including the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, and enjoys performing with local community orchestras. Previously, Christina performed with the Manhattan School of Music Symphony Orchestra, the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and the Georgian Bay Symphony. Additionally, she has experience playing with wind ensembles and choirs. Christina was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada in 2020 and 2021. She had the privilege of performing frequently at the beautiful Winspear Centre with the Edmonton Youth Orchestra (2015-2018) and as a guest with the University of Alberta Symphony Orchestra (2018). She was delighted to be in the orchestra for the Canadian premiere of the theatre production “I Am Harvey Milk” by Andrew Lippa as part of the 9th annual Artists for Life event in 2018.
In December 2021, Christina made her solo debut with the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra, as a winner of the 2021 Concerto Competition. She was recently featured on the CBC’s annual “30 hot Canadian classical musicians under 30” list. Christina has also hosted and curated the programs for fundraising recitals for youth ministry and to sponsor refugee families, and participates frequently in local festivals. Performance highlights include playing for her high school commencement ceremony at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium for an audience of 2500 people, and a solo recital as an Emerging Artist for the Edmonton Recital Society.
Christina is the recipient of two Royal Conservatory of Music Gold Medals, as well as various scholarships from the MacEwan University Conservatory Fall Music Festival, and the Edmonton Kiwanis Music Festival. Christina has successfully completed RCM level 10 in both piano and harp.
Since 2010, Christina has been active as a freelancer; performing at weddings, galas, dinner events, and other private functions. Notable locations include the historic Hotel Macdonald in Edmonton, and the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in Toronto.
Christina actively collaborates with composers and other musicians to promote new music and increase the harp repertoire, both solo and ensemble. Her musical studies began at a young age in Edmonton, studying piano with Monica Ortlieb and harp with Hannah Beukema. She later studied with Nora Bumanis, Principal Harp of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. Christina holds a Master of Music degree in Classical Harp from the Manhattan School of Music, where she studied with Mariko Anraku, Associate Principal Harp of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. She completed her Bachelor of Music degree in Harp Performance with Honours from the University of Toronto, where she studied with internationally renowned harpist Judy Loman.
